Not surprised. To quote Jorge Ramos “Latinos don’t forget that it was you, the Republicans, who approved Arizona’s anti-immigrant law SB 1070. Other similar laws in Alabama and Georgia, among other states, were also approved by you”.

Todos in my familia voted for President Obama, they’re all not even that liberal. I’m proud of them and they’re apparently all cheering loudly back home.

From Xochitl,

Between Latina women, 74% support Obama vs. Romney’s 21%
Between Latino men, 61% support Obama vs. Romney’s  32%

Latina women, by far the better of the two.

By way of political-linguaphile,

Hispanic Magazine creates a yearly rank for the best colleges and universities for Latino students. Included on this list are academic institutions that continue to successfully recruit and retain Hispanic students.

To create this list of the top 25 colleges and universities for Latinos, the following criteria has been used:

  • Total Hispanic student enrollment
  • Number of Latinos graduating
  • Number of Hispanic-related degree programs
  • Number of Hispanic student organizations and minority support programs
  • Number of Hispanic faculty

Let me just state that UC Berkeley has wonderful programs in place to help out Latin@ students but that 10% seems generous. I’ve been told the Latin@ enrollment at UC Berkeley is at pre-affirmative action lows (or so it was last year) AND for a state with as many Latin@’s as California, I find even a generous estimate of 10% disheartening.

It’s a big school and I love it but it can be a lonely place for Latin@s in the sciences.* With that said, please apply and don’t be afraid to rep your barrio or city or whatever. We have good Latin@ food, that matters.

*For example, there are zero Latin@s in my bioengineering courses but I know they exist.

UCLA Medical School’s drive to graduate Latino doctors

The UCLA Medical School started the IMG program which seeks to address the linguistic and cultural barriers that stand between most U.S. doctors and their Latino patients. (Courtesy of UCLA International Medical Graduates)

What do you do when your state has a 39 percent Latino population but Latino physicians are only 5 percent of doctors?

Very interesting, I haven’t explored the program too much but I know a few Latin@’s at UCLA’s medical school. I have the opportunity to go to medical school but I’d rather attend graduate school (I once had the pleasure to listen to Jasper Rine rant against MD/PhD programs.) That decision is personal but my collegiate Latin@ network is dominated by those of us in the medical field. With that said, we need more doctors.

Report: Hate Crimes Against Latinos Rise 47% in California
The year 2010 saw a marked uptick in hate crimes against Latinos statewide, according to newly released statistics from the California Attorney General’s office.

One of the most popular talk shows in Latino friendly Southern California is 640 AM, this is a conservative talk show unlike others on the stations. Outside of consistent race baiting and the dehumanization of Latino’s or “the illegals”, one of their segments is called “Heads On A Stick.” To add salt to the wounds, they’re invited every single day to comment on topics for the 6 o’clock news. Historically, there have always been tensions between communities in California but this is unacceptable in a state where the minority will soon become the majority.
