For the record: It’s entirely unclear from this video whether CNN intentionally cut the feed as the soldier was talking, or if there was a legitimate technical glitch that caused them to lose the connection. Let’s not jump to any conclusions one way or the other just yet. Also, it’s a little presumptuous to call something the “viral video of the night” before it’s had the chance to go viral.

However you’re right, it was probably a glitch.

Live updates for the Iowa GOP caucuses. The data team is killing it tonight!
The reason I’m following the caucuses on the internet, the graphics. Nice job LA Times.
Santorum appeals to Iowa voters with a mix of unusual lines that won’t play outside the Hawkeye State. “Diversity creates conflict. If we celebrate diversity, we create conflict,” Santorum told the audience in Ottumwa.
The idea that statements like this one represent any part of a winning political strategy in 2012 is pretty troubling.
Read charitably, what Santorum is saying is that we ought to ignore or paper over our differences. Read less charitably, what he’s saying is that there ought not to be any differences. He’s not specifically claiming that America should be a white, Christian, heterosexual, English-speaking country … but he’s certainly hinting at it pretty strongly.
Now, there’s no chance that Rick Santorum could become the next President of the United States … but the fact that a candidate is able to garner national attention while espousing these sorts of ideas really bothers the liberal pluralist in me.
I’m hopeful that Iowans prove wrong the pundits who are forecasting a good day for Santorum this week and roundly reject these narrow-minded views that he believes will help him win in their state.
Just a reminder,

Is it okay to state that Santorum’s excreting santorum from his mouth? [source]
