“In high school, a friend’s mother told me that “the government should ship back all illegal immigrants.” Ship back — as if we were damaged furniture.”

Coming Out: A Confession from a Harvard Student

Both were successful individuals, but thanks to the instability of the Fujimori regime, my parents lost everything. Both of them held university degrees, but as is the case with many professional immigrants, Mom and Dad saw themselves relegated to unfulfilling work once settled in America.

This reminds me of one of the waiters at the Salvadoran restaurant in Berkeley, California; he was a university professor back home but over here he’s a waiter.

I don’t even know what to make of this Card at Hallmark. #USA #Immigration #Cotizenship #DreamAct (Taken with Instagram)

It’s certainly a very interesting card to sell.

“In Hispanic areas of Phoenix, you can see decals on cars that read FUCK ARPAIO (which is also the title of a popular Chicano anti-Arpaio rap song).”

“Flanked by Arpaio’s two large body men, we pass through a series of jail yards, first for the women (where one of Arpaio’s deputies warns me, “Remember that you’re a married man – heh heh”), then for the male prisoners, who idle torpidly in the shade. Inside Arpaio’s jails, according to the federal lawsuit, guards refer to Latino inmates as “wetbacks,” “Mexican bitches,” “stupid Mexicans” and “fucking Mexicans.” Female prisoners, the suit claims, were forced to sleep in their own menstrual blood; officers refused to respond to the inmates’ pleas because they were made in Spanish. Meanwhile, Arpaio’s jailers allegedly circulated e-mail images of a Chihuahua in a bathing suit, calling it “a rare photo of a Mexican Navy Seal.”

My Taxes Are Documented. I Am Not.

Undocumented American workers paid $11.2 billion in taxes in 2010 — putting money INTO systems like health care, Social Security, and education, not taking it out. Attacks on American immigrants have claimed the opposite. Ironically, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection annual budget is $3.5 billion — an amount covered by undocumented Americans three times over. Share this with someone who doesn’t see the value that new Americans bring to our communities every day through their work and through their paychecks.

Why don’t Mexicans just come to this country legally?

Gustavo Arellano provides his thoughts.

By the way, here’s a cute chart that tells you what “get in line” looks like in steps and in terms of years. You’ll notice that a lot of this is dependent on the nation your home nation. Now think about the historical relationship between the U.S. and Mexico, now think about how easy this nation might make it for Mexican citizens seeking to become citizens in the states.
