Three women from punk feminist group Pussy Riot have been sentenced to two years in prison for their church protest against Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Tolokonnikova, Alekhina and Samutsevich smiled from behind the glass of their cell in the Russian courtroom as their verdict was read. Following the verdict, supporters erupted in cries of “shame” outside the courthouse, where one-time chess champion Garry Kasparov was one of many taken into custody by police.

“This is the perfect Kremlin reply to those who talked about Russian liberalism under Putin or who believed in an acquittal for Pussy Riot or Putin’s talk about leniency,” Kasparov said via phone from the police station, in a statement released by Human Rights Foundation.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova’s shirt reads ¡NO PASARÁN!, which translates to “they shall not pass!
