ScienceShot: Will the Genome Save the Banana? - ScienceNOW [via fjt]
Bananas are almost identical all over the world in terms of genetics. As a result they are very much vulnerable to some kind of diseases. Unfortunately they are infamously hard to read their genome sequences.
Recently an important ancestor to today’s banana (right) has been successfully DNA sequenced, a good news for saving bananas.
A genetically modified organism.
